Amazed to find I've seen every one of these films, and I'm far from a horror buff. Admittedly, at least half I saw before puberty on old weekend horror movie shows on television. But these are all extremely effective motion pictures, no question. I likewise saw RACE WITH THE DEVIL late night on TV and that ending is seared into my memory.
Best horror flicks I've seen in the 21st Century are Na Hong-jin's THE WAILING, Jennifer Kent's THE BABBADOOK, and, just a couple months back, Cameron & Colin Cairnes' LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL. That last one was not just a good movie, it was an exhilarating example of how creative minds can still deliver an original idea on a low budget and hit the bullseye.
I too saw Race with the Devil on late night tv many years ago. Late Night with the Devil was fantastic, even though it threatened to go a bit Ghostbusters at the end. I must write a post on it soon.
Okay, I've watched both Witchfinder General and don't really see it as a horror, wasn't my cup of tea though I did like Price in it. It is Masque of the Red Death that I really liked, it was quite good thanks for recommending it!
If you liked Masque, then check out the other AIP Poe adaptation - The Pit & the Pendulum, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Bother starting Vincent Price.
A pretty good list, sadly for myself I've only seen Jaws and Halloween of the films on this list the former I liked, the latter I've mixed feelings about but do like some things about. As to the rest Vanishing Point I've heard of.
As to the Red Death movie & Witchfinder General I've never heard of, and must now watch as I love Price and think him a premiere horror icon. I love horror, but most of my knowledge is of the Monster movies of every era so that I'm still discovering horror movies.
I'm going to add each of these to my list of 'must watch' so that I can offer up a better comment on each one and properly appreciate this list better. Hope you don't mind that I do this. Means I'll be restacking this post more than once mon ami.
No problem my friend, and many thanks for the restack.
Both Price films on the list are superb, Witchfinder General is unremittingly bleak, and Price’s best performance for my money, utterly shorn of any theatrics.
The Omen is my favourite devil flick and evil kid movie. The sequels are okay and at least narratively justified, if not a patch on the original.
The Dead Zone I love. King’s most underrated work and a superb adaptation.
If you end up liking Red Death and you haven’t seen them, also watch the other two AIP Poe adaptations from the same era - The Fall of the House of Usher and The Pit & the Pendulum, both starting Price.
Jaws, The Thing and The Omen would be in my list too. I can't say too much about the others here as I've not seen most of them. Perhaps they will be in my top ten once I do? My current list would have to include Night of the Demon, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Evil Dead. Maybe Alien too: is it Horror or Sci-Fi? Currently my favourite Vincent Price film would be The Pit & The Pendulum. I think I preferred this to Red Death. I haven't seen Witchfinder yet. Speaking of which, Blood on Satan's Claw could make my list. I saw it a very long time ago and remember it as pretty atmospheric and disturbing. I'd probably also have to include a Hammer oddity like The Gorgon. I might throw in Carry On Screaming or Young Frankenstein for some light relief.

Will do

Cool, if Price's movie is that good I gotta check it out, he's always top-tier and will check out the rest right afterwards.
Witchfinder General can be a tough watch. Man’s fallen nature is the monster.
